Ashbourne Resident Simon Biggs has been presented with a ‘Service to the Community Award’ by Cllr Tony Millward in recognition of his service to Ashbourne and specifically his role as a volunteer with not one but two First Responder Groups. Simon is the unit co-ordinator & responds for Ashbourne First Responders and also responds for the Mayfield and Ellastone First Responders. And if that were not enough, in his day job, he is an Operating Department Practitioner at the Royal Derby Hospital, where his duties involves working in the General & Emergency Theatre, A & E Resusitation, mentoring and helping to train student ambulance paramedics.
His partner Jo Wardle says ‘Despite him being on call and going out all hours I’m very proud of him.
Nicola O’Halleran, Group Coordinator for Mayfield and Ellastone CFR said, ‘Simon has been a fantastic member of the group. He knows his stuff inside out. We’re always on the lookout for new recruits but you don’t have to have a medical background like Simon. We provide the training, uniform and equipment. You provide your time.’
